I have a spreadsheet (Excel) or (OpenOffice.org CalC) with the unique identifier in the first column, the original caption (English) in the second and some translations(Norwegian) in the third column. Can I use pootling for a faster translation? How do I get the file in to start with?

Pootling at present cannot open spreadsheet file directly. You have to convert to any supported file formats such as PO, XLIFF.

  1. Open the spreadsheet file
  2. Save as CSV text (.csv)
  3. In konsole, type csv2po -i file.csv -0 file.po

Now you can start your translation with PO format.

Note: Pootling can also read from csv file directly, but as it is a monolingual format, once translated, you will lose the source string.
